Karen Derr
announces her intent to run for Houston City Council At-Large Position 1.
According to the City Secretary, official filing for the position will not commence until
aproximately August after 13the State Legislature meets. Derr, who is a local
business person, is founder and broker for Karen Derr and Associates Realty, with three
offices in Houston and Galveston. She cites her experience as a successful business owner
and manager, her community service, as well as her strong desire to serve
the community, as qualifying factors in her candidacy.
"Public service has been a lifelong goal for me. My career, family and friends have
finally brought me to this point where I can devote myself full time to public office and
the citizens of Houaton," says Derr. Safety and crime, infrastructure for the
district, economic development of run down commercial areas, hike and bike trails,
preservation of green space, and youth opportunities are some of her concerns. She also feels she is uniquely qualified to address concerns of historic
neighborhoods, having worked and lived in some of Houston's most historically significant
